FlahertyFans Updates: Jack Flaherty Traded To Hometown Dodgers at Trade Deadline

Jack Flaherty has been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the middle of his incredible redemption arc. The 28-year old Burbank, CA native was flipped by the non-contending Tigers after posting a 2.95 ERA and 11.2 K/9. He will likely make his first start in October since his elite 2019 season in St. Louis.

Flaherty was sent to Baltimore for a small return package at last year’s trade deadline. However, he gained much more notoriety from top teams after his first consistently good season since 2019. Detroit has almost no chance at playoff baseball, meaning Flaherty could be a valuable rental on an expiring contract.

Yesterday, Flaherty was scratched from his start due to trade protection, meaning his six-inning shutout performance in Cleveland would be his final outing for Detroit. Just a few minutes later, Bob Nightengale reported that the Yankees were in “extensive trade talks” for Flaherty in exchange for Nestor Cortes.

However, Ken Rosenthal broke the news that New York backed out of the deal due to injury concerns. With five minutes remaining before the 6:00 PM EST deadline, Jeff Passan reported that the Dodgers swooped in for Flaherty, adding him into the rotation of Tyler Glasnow, Clayton Kershaw, and the injured Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

In exchange for Flaherty, Los Angeles shipped off Thayron Liranzo and Trey Sweeney, their #8 and #22 prospects respectively. Detroit decided to keep Tarik Skubal, Flaherty’s former partner in crime in the Tigers’ rotation. Skubal is under control until 2027.

Flaherty’s hometown of Burbank, CA is just a 13 minute drive from Dodger Stadium. He and his adopted mother, who maintain a very tight relationship, were both massive Dodgers fans during his childhood. Now, he will be able to pitch for that same team under the lights of postseason baseball.

Congratulations, Jack! It’s an exciting new chapter of your baseball journey. While I hope to not see you pitch against my Phillies in October, it’s been awesome to watch and write about your incredible journey this season. Best of luck in blue!
