With the start of a new MLB season, Jack Flaherty has found a new home. On Sunday, he made his first start for the Detroit Tigers, a great showing for the promising starter.
After being flipped to Baltimore at the trade deadline last season, Flaherty became a free agent. He signed with the Detroit Tigers on a 1-year, $14 million contract. He currently wears number 9, the fourth number of his career.
Flaherty boasted a 4.99 ERA last season in St. Louis and Detroit. It was his first fully healthy year since 2019, where he finished 4th in Cy Young voting. Entering his 8th season, Baseball Reference projects him to have a 4.60 ERA and 1.459 WHIP. Flaherty pitched in 6 Spring Training games in Florida, winning all 6 with a 2.95 ERA.
On Sunday, he made his first appearance for the Tigers on the road. Against the White Sox, Flaherty pitched 6 innings, striking out 7. He only allowed 4 hits and 1 run, which was on a solo-shot by Korey Lee.
Flaherty’s excellency is a great sign for this season. If he’s able to stay healthy and consistent, we could be looking at one of the best starters in the AL Central. While he has been shaky at times throughout his career, the 28-year old is in the prime of his career and maintains a really good pitch arsenal (4-seam fastball, slider, curveball, changeup, sinker, rare cutter).
The Tigers remain 3-0 on the season, one of four undefeated teams remaining. Flaherty is set to most likely pitch against the Athletics at home on the 5th, 6th, or 7th. I will be providing updates on Flaherty, my favorite player in the league, all season long.
